Top-seed Gustavo Kuerten cruised through a first-round victory in the Mexican Open defeating Spain's Felix Mantilla 6-4, 6-1.

The Brazilian will face fellow Brazilian Alexandre Simoni in the next round on the clay courts of the Pacific Coast resort.
