Rusedski on top in Davis Cup

GREG RUSEDSKI banished fears for Great Britain’s Davis Cup future in the post-Tim Henman era by sealing their place back in the World Group qualifying round in Tel Aviv.

Rusedski consolidated Saturday’s spectacular doubles debut of his young team-mates Andrew Murray and David Sherwood by beating Israel’s Noam Okun 6-3 6-4 6-2.

Canadian-born Rusedski’s triumph gave Britain an unassailable lead in this Euro-African Zone Group 1 tie, which ended in a narrow three-set defeat for Yorkshireman Sherwood in his dead rubber against Harel Levy, completing a 3-2 match win.
