Casey victory

Limerick’s featherweight Willie Casey of the Southill Club was a narrow winner in the semi-finals of the National Intermediate Boxing Championships at the National Stadium on Saturday night. The finals will be held next Friday.

Casey just shaded it over Paul Cowzer of Darndale in one of the best fights on the night.

Following a computer hitch, light welter Dara O’Sullivan from the Fr Horgan’s club in Cork had a wait before the five judges voted 3-2 in his favour against Dean Byrne of the Crumlin club.

It was a great occasion for the Donegal heavy weight Conor Quigley of the Twintowns club.

He had retired 16 years ago but is now boxing better than ever at 31 years of age. He ousted Michael Fouhy of St Colman’s, Cork 9-4 in a technically well boxed bout.

The Twintowns club had another winner in bantam weight Benny Harkin who had a 16-8 win over Robert Molloy of Navan.
