Kipketer continues to blow the opposition away

A THRILLING finish last night saw Commonwealth 5,000 metres champion Sammy Kipketer step up in distance and win over 10,000m in the Ivo Van Damme Golden League meeting in Brussels.
Kipketer continues to blow the opposition away

Kipketer, 20, produced the quickest time of the year and a personal best by a large margin winning in 26 minutes 49.38 seconds.

Kipketer whose time moved him into fifth position on the world all-time list held off Assefa Mezegebu and Richard Limo in a race where personal bests fell like ninepins.

Tim Montgomery maintained his dominance over American rival Maurice Greene when beating the world record holder over 100 metres for the third time in three weeks in the former Heysel Stadium.

It was an easy win for last year's World Championships silver medallist.

Taking control of the race at the midway point, Montgomery finished in a very fast 9.91sec his fastest performance of the summer.

On another miserable night for Greene, sixth in 10.11sec behind former world junior champion Mark Lewis-Francis, who clocked 10.08sec, there was a Portuguese record for Francis Obikwelu.

The European 100m and 200m silver medallist ran 10.01sec to head off the strong challenge of Commonwealth champion Kim Collins. The St Kitts and Nevis star was given the same time.

After finishing fifth over 3000m in the Stade Roi Baudouin 12 months ago and not even training for three months feeling worn out, Gabriela Szabo again lost over the distance.

But on this occasion it took a photo finish to decide that rival Berhane Adere was the winner, the Ethiopian running a season's best of 8:26.14 to hold off the Romanian's late rush for the line.

Szabo, the Olympic 5000m champion, who looked beaten when Adere took the lead off the last bend, finished only one-hundredth-of-a-second behind.

A late surge for the line also saved the reputation of Marion Jones, the Olympic gold medallist again going head-to-head over 100m for a second successive week with Zhanna Pintusevic-Block.

The Ukrainian, who surprisingly beat the American for the world title a year ago, looked to have the race sewn up in the last 10 metres but a last-gasp dip for the line gave Jones victory in 10.88sec.

The Turkish record fell for the second time in a month to new 1500m sensation Sureyya Ayhan, who just as she did when winning the European title, dominated her opponents.

The 23-year-old on that occasion set a world-leading mark of 3:58.79 but ran even faster in only her second race of the year to cross the line in 3:57.75.

Gail Devers returned to winning ways with an easy 100m hurdles victory.

The three-times world champion won in a very fast 12.49secs, coasting to victory ahead of fellow American Anjanette Kirkland who produced a season's best of 12.62secs. Third place in 12.65 went to Brigitte Foster of Jamaica.

World record holder Wilson Kipketer decimated the 800m field. The naturalised Dane beat his former countrymen, Kenyans William Yiampoy and Joseph Mutua, with a brilliant two laps of the track in 1min 42.74secs. The runner-up and his team-mate finished in 1:43.36 and 1:43.81.
