Four minute mile celebrations

The 50th anniversary of the world’s first sub-four minute mile will be celebrated by Cork’s oldest athletic club, Rising Sun, who promote a Straight Mile on the Lisfihill Road, Ballinhassig, on Thursday May 6 at 8pm.

It was on May 6, 1954, that Roger Bannister ran 3:59.4 for the mile at Iffley Road and, to celebrate the 50th anniversary, the Rising Sun AC, founded in 1944, invites everyone to participate in their commemorative event.

Time Certificates will be presented to everyone who finishes and there will be other prizes as well.

Proceeds from the race will to Enable Ireland, Lavanagh Centre, and those taking part are advised to come prepared as there will be no changing facilities.

Those approaching Ballinhassig from the Cork or Bandon direction should turn right at the Marian Hall and take the first turn on the left to arrive at the start while those coming from the Airport Road should turn right at Five Mile Bridge towards Ballinhassig and turn left at the Marian Hall.
