Second seed Andy Roddick suffered a shock second-round exit at the hands of unseeded Argentinian Jose Acasuso following a five-set marathon at the French Open.

Acasuso, who is ranked 69th in the world and has won just two titles in his career, defeated the 22-year-old American 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 8-6 in three hours and 21 minutes.

World number three Amelie Mauresmo is relishing the prospect of a real fight in her next match against Ana Ivanovic after cruising past compatriot and wild-card Alize Cornet in the second round.

The 24-year-old French player, who is one of the favourites to lift the trophy at Roland Garros on June 4, hammered the 15-year-old 6-0, 6-1 in less than an hour.

World number two Maria Sharapova also enjoyed a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win over unseeded French player Aravane Razai.

French woman Tatiana Golovin, the 17th seed who won the French Open’s mixed double crown in 2004 with countryman Richard Gasquet, eliminated Italia’s Antonella Serra Zanetti in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, while Russian sixth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova overcame Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson 6-3, 6-4.
