Scanlon leads World Championship team

CYCLING IRELAND yesterday announced their selections for next week’s World Road Cycling Championships in Madrid.

Mark Scanlon, of AG2R, leads the Grant Thornton Team Ireland, which features David O’Loughlin, Navigators Insurance, National Road Race Champion for 2005 and David McCann, Giant Asia.

The Espoir (U23) team will be led by Philip Deignan and includes Páidí O’Brien, Andrew McQuaid, Miceal Concannon and Ryan Connor, while Siobhán Dervan of LOTTO Ladies is the sole Irish representative in the women’s elite category, having overcome a recent illness scare.

Cycling Ireland Manager Frankie Campbell said: “Cycling Ireland is committed to the development of cycling, which is evident in the large Espoir team we have entered. That said, we are confident we have entered our strongest possible team and are looking forward to a good result at the championships.”
