Cragg hoping to land further glory in Boston
The Irish star defeated Olympic 10,000 metres champion Kenenisa Bekele in sensational style before going on to win the European Indoor title a few weeks later.
It was an inspirational victory for Cragg and a massive boost to his confidence before his runaway European success in Madrid.
Cragg will be switching to the two-mile event and he can expect an even tougher race in what is already a star-studded line-up at the January 28 meeting.
World 5,000 metres bronze medal-winner Craig Mottram will fly in from Australia to test US-based Cragg, and a strong selection of Africans will make up the field.
Indeed it is reckoned to be the best field ever assembled on American soil for the distance and a fast time is on the cards.
Abebe Dinkessa, Gebre Gebremariam and Sileshi Sihine, plus world indoor bronze medallist Markos Geneti, will carry Ethiopian hopes, while Boaz Cheboiywo is the top Kenyan in the field.
Ryan Hall and Ian Dobson, both members of Team USA over 5,000 metres at the world championships in the summer, will be aiming to impress against the overseas visitors.
Meanwhile, the GOAL Mile, which has been going on in Cork for around 20 years, will take place on Christmas morning at CIT Track in Bishopstown from 10am until 12.30pm.
A number of other GOAL Miles will take place around the county.
Doneraile Park will cater for the North Cork area as Mallow AC stage their second GOAL Mile from 10am to 11.30am.
The venue is Tower Park, Youghal, for the East Cork area, from 11am to 12.30pm, while another location is Ballynoe, the mile run taking place at St Catherine’s GAA club in the village from 11am to 12.30pm.
The format of the GOAL Mile is a run takes place every 15 to 20 minutes and people can run, jog or walk the distance while contributing to GOAL’s work in the third world. A full list of venues and times can be found at www.goal.ie
