Rory McIlroy has signed Shane Lowry in the first ever transfer deal for indoor golf competition TGL.
McIlroy is a co-founder, alongside Tiger Woods, of the 'Tomorrow’s Golf League' format, which has already played two seasons.
In a team format, pro golfers play indoors using simulators for long shots and a real putting green.
McIlroy captains the 'Boston Common Golf' franchise, which announced on Monday that it had 'traded' for Shane Lowry from the 'Bay Golf Club' team. It's the first such trade in the short history of the event.
The 'transfer fee' for Lowry will be Boston Common Golf’s "fourth selection to fill its open roster spot" — in other words, a draft pick. For the third season of the event, teeing off in December, teams are expanding from four to five players.
Boston must also hand over a further selection pick for each of the next three seasons, "along with commercial considerations".
McIlroy and Lowry are joined on the Boston side by Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama. Current holders of the title are Los Angeles Golf Club, who have Collin Morikawa, Sahith Theegala, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood.
“I’m delighted to be joining Boston Common Golf," Lowry said. "Having Rory alongside me and being part of this group makes it particularly exciting, and I’m looking forward to helping the team bring a championship to Boston."
McIlroy added: “Shane is a great friend and someone I love having alongside me in team competition.
“We’ve had some special wins together, including at the Zurich Classic, and I know the quality of his game and how much he cares about winning for his teammates. I’m delighted to welcome him to Boston Common Golf and excited about what we can achieve together this season."
Keegan Bradley also welcomed the new signing. “Shane is a fierce competitor with a tremendous all-around game, and I’m excited to have him on our side. He brings the kind of energy that makes team golf fun, and he’ll fit right in with this group. We’re eager to get back to SoFi Center, and adding Shane gives us even more confidence as we chase a championship for Boston.”
