Defending champion Rory McIlroy found himself six shots off the lead as Ryo Hisatsune seized a one-shot lead after the first round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Japan’s Hisatsune made 10 birdies in a round of 62 to lead Keegan Bradley and Sam Burns, who both carded rounds of 63 – Burns at Pebble Beach and Bradley at Spyglass Hill.
Americans Tony Finau, Chris Gotterup and Patrick Rodgers sit two shots off the lead.
English pair Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood shot rounds of 66 and 67 respectively to lie just outside the top 10.
McIlroy, who opened at Spyglass Hill, three-putted for double bogeys twice in three holes at the third and fifth, having played the back-nine first and turned in an impressive 31.
World number one Scottie Scheffler posted a 72 at Pebble Beach.
“I feel like typically I’m good at scoring, and today I felt like I didn’t score at all,” Scheffler said in quotes on the PGA Tour website.
“Anything that kind of went wrong seemed to be going that direction. I actually feel like I’m playing pretty well. Just one of those days.”
