Seamus Power's desperate fight to retain his card on the PGA Tour got an all-important boost in the Utah dessert as he returned to finish a disrupted second round and held his nerve to make a cut which could be crucial.
Having seen his Friday challenge at the $6m Bank of Utah Championship end early due to weather and light issues, the Waterford man made his way back to the Black Desert Resort Golf Course on the precipice of the cutline.
Power currently sits 135th in the FedEx Cup Fall standings, the Tour's wraparound season which sees players fight to keep their status at the elite end of the game. The top 100 will be fully exempt for 2026 while the top 125 earn conditional status at the end of next month's RSM Classic.
Given such fine margins, making it to the weekend of the remaining events in the autumnal swing is key. Power knew as much when he restarted his second round with just three holes sitting on 1-under with the cutline hovering right above him.
Power didn't waste any time settling his weekend plans as he found a birdie which would prove to be pivotal on his 16th hole, the long par-five seventh. A superb second from fully 290 yards back in the fairway put him in position for a two-putt birdie which moved him to 2-under overall.
A pair of closing pars would add up to a second-successive 70 and ensure a nervous wait as the remaining stragglers came in but the cutline stayed at 2-under and Power made it on the number. Leader Michael Brennan sat on 10-under with a healthy chasing pack of eight rivals all within two strokes.
There would be little time for celebration for Power as he would be among the first wave of third-round starters, setting off at lunchtime looking for further progress.
