Round one 'hard test' for Tom McKibbin in his major debut at US Open

TOUGH START: Tom McKibbin briefly held a share of the very early lead with Power at 1-under after his only birdie of the day on his fourth hole (No. 13), but he finished with a 4-over 74 with a double and three bogeys on his card. Pic: Jan Kruger/Getty Images

Séamus Power accomplished the hardest thing to do on Pinehurst No. 2 – bounce back from the kind of green-induced debacle that ruins U.S. Open weeks.

Power four-putted the 18th green (his ninth hole of the day) from 30 feet to make double and fell to 3-over after a bogey on the second. But instead of succumbing to the misfortunes that the No. 2 course invites, he went on a run of three consecutive birdies on 3, 4 and 5 and ultimately signed for a 1-over 71 in the first round of the 124th U.S. Open.
