Shane Lowry 'almost reduced to tears' after worst round of his professional career

His 13-over par was four shots worse than his 81 in 2011 at Celtic Manor in a lashing rain and 23 strokes worse than the major record he posted only a month ago at Valhalla.

The question rambled a bit about breadth of Shane Lowry’s season – a partnership win with Rory McIlroy, a 62 at the PGA Championship, some decent finishes, an 85 on Sunday at Memorial … Lowry saw through the awkward attempt to bury the lead.

“You’re saying that with a smile on your face,” he said. “Too much smiling.”
