Fota Island’s David Howard eagled the 18th to go into the final 36 holes just three shots behind Royal Dublin’s Jack McDonnell in the Kingspan-sponsored East of Ireland Amateur Open Championship at County Louth.

Howard opened with an uninspiring one-over 73 at the pristine Baltray links on Saturday but he found his groove on day two, rolling in four birdies in a row from the third before following a lone bogey at the short par-four 14th with a closing eagle three.
