On one of the more surreal days in major championship history, Xander Schauffele cooled off just enough retain his lead but not run away and hide late Friday at the PGA Championship while Rory McIlroy stumbled just enough to retain distant hopes of repeating at Valhalla and snapping his 10-year major drought.

Schauffele shot 3-under 68 to hold a one-shot lead over morning charger Collin Morikawa, who shot 66-65 to set the early clubhouse bar at 11-under. Sahith Theegala shot 67 late Friday to sit alone in third at 10-under.
