World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler spent Friday morning in handcuffs and a jail cell. He was shaking and his head was swimming. The most straightlaced and buttoned-up golfer in the world was facing felony assault charges against a police officer just a few hours before his scheduled tee time in the PGA Championship. The last thing he thought he’d be doing was playing golf later in the morning, much less shoot a 5-under 66 to climb to third on the leaderboard and then deliver the most candid and graceful press conference of his young career.
“First of all, my sympathies go out to the family of Mr. (John) Mills,” Scheffler said of the pedestrian who was killed crossing the busy highway in front of the entrance to Valhalla Golf Club that prompted the traffic issues that ultimately led to Scheffler’s arrest. “I can’t imagine what they’re going through this morning. One day he’s heading to the golf course to watch a tournament. A few moments later he’s trying to cross the street, and now he’s no longer with us. I can’t imagine what they're going through. My heart – I feel for them. I’m sorry.
