Justin Rose blooms while Tiger Woods makes gains

Woods, the only person other than Rose to win the event which benefits his own foundation more than once, carded four birdies in a row following a disappointing start in his opening 68.

Justin Rose began the defence of his Quicken Loans National title with a compelling five-under-par 66 as Tiger Woods showed flashes of his best form at the event he hosts.

Rose, champion in 2010 and 2014, made eight birdies and three bogeys, the last of which came on his final hole of the day, to sit three shots behind joint leaders Retief Goosen and Ryo Ishikawa.
