Dunne can claim Claret Jug but not the £1.15m Open prize money

Irish golfing sensation Paul Dunne will not receive a single penny in prize money even if he wins the British Open this afternoon.

The Wicklow amateur is currently tied for the lead and is attempting to become the first amateur to win the ‘Open’ since Bobby Jones back in 1930.

The R&A rulebook clearly states that: “An amateur golfer must not play golf for prize money or its equivalent in a match, competition or exhibition.”

“However an amateur golfer may participate in a golf match, competition or exhibition where prize money or its equivalent is offered, provided that prior to participation he waives his right to accept prize money in that event.”

The prize for first place in the competition stands at £1.15m(€1.65m).

However, both players are right in the hunt for ultimate glory which includes the gold medal awarded to the overall winner of the tournament.

US clothing giant Under Armour has been supplying Dunne with his clothing during the event although no formal agreement has been signed between them.

Regardless of what happens this afternoon the Irishman is going to be hot property going forward.

Dunne is expected to turn professional following The Walker Cup in September.
