Rory McIlroy birdied two of his first three holes to move into the top 10 on day three of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.

McIlroy was tied for 12th on three under par over overnight but picked up shots at the second and third holes to move six shots behind leader at the halfway stage Jim Furyk.

The American followed up a magnificent opening round of 63 with a four-under 66 at the Firestone CC (South Course) yesterday to open up a two-stroke lead over Spaniard Rafael Cabrera Bello.

Louis Oosthuizen and Jason Dufner, in third and fourth respectively, are just about to get their third round under way.

Englishman Luke Donald failed to advance his score after a bogey and a birdie on his opening two holes and remains in a tie for sixth alongside McIlroy.

Graeme McDowell was just one shot further behind overall after five holes.

He is joined by Bo Van Pelt, who had contrasting fortunes on his front nine, which contained an eagle, three birdies and two bogeys.
