Early warning at Augusta as storm clouds gather

Two double bogeys in the first group on the first hole gave an early warning that the second round of The Masters was going to be another tough test today.

In much cooler conditions and with rainclouds overhead Spain's Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and American Scott Verplank both missed the opening green and then three-putted it as well to drop to four-over-par and three-over respectively.

It made Martin Laird's par to remain four-over look positively brilliant, especially as fellow Scot Sandy Lyle - in last place after a nightmare opening 86 - quickly became another to take six after finding the greenside bunker in two.

England's Lee Westwood led overnight on five-under-par and was teeing off again at 9.40pm as he continued his search for a first Major. This is his 56th attempt.

The world number three, whose 67 matched his best score at Augusta National, was one in front of Swede Peter Hanson and South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen, who pushed Westwood into second place in the 2010 Open at St Andrews.

Oosthuizen soon had a double bogey on his card as well - but his came on the 575-yard second.

Forced to take a penalty drop after hooking his drive into a creek, he then put his fourth shot into the front bunker as the wind suddenly picked up and, by failing to get up-and-down, went to two-under, dropping from second to tied ninth.

Playing partner Graeme McDowell parred the first two to remain three-over, while Laird birdied two and three, but dropped his first shot of the day on the fifth to be alongside the Irishman.

Ian Woosnam, the 54-year-old 1991 winner, made the best start of anyone in the early stages. The Welshman birdied the opening two holes to improve to three-over.
