Magnificent 64 sees Simpson lead in Greensboro
Webb Simpson signed for a six-under third round of 64 to claim a two-shot lead in the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro.
Second overnight, Simpson wrested the advantage from Tommy Gainey, who slipped back into second with a moderate round of 69.
Simpson did not look likely to make a charge after making two bogeys in his first four holes but then found his A-game, getting back on terms with birdies at five and eight before picking up six strokes between the 13th and 17th holes, with four birdies and an eagle.
Gainey also struggled early, bogeying the first two holes before pulling it round and ensuring an under-par finish with a birdie on 17.
Carl Petterson and Josh Mallinger sit on shot further back on 12-under, the Swede shining with a blemish-free 63 to claim the round of the day.
Daniel Summerhays is alone on 11-under with a chasing pack of five on 10-under.
