Rookie Granberg enjoys record-breaking round of 62 at Selangor Masters
Finnish rookie Joonas Granberg hit a course-record 62 to establish a four-stroke lead after the first round of the Selangor Masters in Malaysia.
Granberg, a graduate of the Asian Tour’s qualifying school, bagged an eagle on the opening hole before nine birdies and one bogey took him to a superb 10-under-par total.
The 24-year-old’s near faultless round at the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club represented the lowest total on the Asian Tour this season, and left him well clear of American Berry Henson, who shot 66.
Granberg, who reached the turn in 29, managed only a few hours’ sleep due to jet lag and told www.asiantour.com: “My feeling this morning wasn’t like this as I only slept for three hours.
“This is really nice. It’s an amazing feeling. My irons were amazing on the first nine. It was always within one to three metres. My driver was OK but the putting was great. I didn’t miss anything today.
“This is my first time leading. It is nice. I’m going to take it easy. It’s only the first round. I have to play very good in the next three rounds.”
India’s Jyoti Randhawa, South Korea’s Mo Joong-kyung and Thailand’s Pariya Junhasavasdikul were in a share of third place after opening with 67s.
