Monty struggling to make Open

Colin Montgomerie gave himself another mountain to climb when he managed only a one-over-par 71 in the first round of the Open Championship 36-hole qualifier at Sunningdale today.

Just 10 of the 96-strong field go through to Sandwich next month and last year’s Ryder Cup captain, who has not missed the event since his 1990 debut, was outside the top 50 at the halfway point.
