Duo lead in Verona

American Omar Uresti and South Africa’s Rory Sabbatini topped a congested leaderboard after the first round of the Turning Stone Resort Championship at Verona, New York.

The pair fired seven-under-par 65s to lead the field by a stroke from five players – including Chris Tidland, who had two holes to play of his first round when play was suspended due to darkness.

American Tidland was on six under alongside compatriot Brad Faxon, Englishman Brian Davis, German Alex Cejka and Australian Steve Elkington.

Uresti and Sabbatini both picked up seven birdies, five of them on the back nine, without dropping a shot.

Davis, Faxon, Cejka and Elkington also produced bogey-free rounds featuring six birdies.

Two of Davis and Elkington’s birdies came in his last three holes at the seventh and eighth.

Tidland dropped a shot on the 10th – his first – but recovered with four birdies before a further three up to the seventh hole as he sought to take a share of the lead.

Seven players followed at five under par, while 10 were a further shot behind on four under.
