Scott storms to victory in Texas

Australia’s Adam Scott claimed his first PGA Tour title since 2008 with victory in the Valero Texas Open.

Friday’s play was washed out due to heavy rain and a tornado warning, leaving 36 holes to be played on Sunday.

And Scott responded superbly with rounds of 66 and 67 to post a total of 14 under par and one-shot winning margin from Sweden’s Fredrik Jacobson.

The 29-year-old from Adelaide faced an anxious wait after a bogey on the 72nd hole, where he fired his approach into a greenside bunker and missed a short putt for par.

But Jacobson was unable to birdie the same hole to force a play-off and Scott held on for the win.

“It was a long old day but when you get hot it’s good to play 36 holes sometimes,” Scott said.

“Obviously it wasn’t the greatest finish but I played really well after being one under for the tournament after three holes this morning.

“On the last putt I was playing it straight and pulled it a touch, it was a bit of a disaster.”

Jacobson carded rounds of 65 and 70 to finish alone in second on 13 under, with Aaron Baddeley and Ernie Els another stroke back in a share of third.

Els, looking for his third win of the season, began the final day two shots off the lead but rounds of 68 and 69 were not good enough as Scott charged through the field with 12 birdies and an eagle in 36 holes.
