McVeigh wins Ladies' British Amateur Strokeplay

Ireland's Danielle McVeigh claimed the biggest win of her career with a one-stroke victory in the Ladies' British Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship at Royal Aberdeen.

Ireland's Danielle McVeigh claimed the biggest win of her career with a one-stroke victory in the Ladies' British Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship at Royal Aberdeen.

The Royal County Down international, 21, was five strokes adrift of England's Hannah Turland with eight holes to play but closed with a four-over 76 as her rival collapsed to an 81.

Fifteen-year-old Turland looked to be in control as the pair headed down the back nine but triple bogeys at the 11th and 12th and bogeys at the 13th and 14th opened the door for McVeigh.

In tough conditions and battling a strong wind , McVeigh dropped just one shot at the long par-four 17th to head to the 18th two strokes in front.

But while Turland finished with a birdie for a homeward 44, McVeigh made her par-five for a back nine of 38 to add the British title to her 2007 World Student Games win and this year's Welsh Open Strokeplay Championship .

McVeigh said: “I didn’t really think I had a chance of catching Hannah at the turn, with nine holes to go, because she was so far in front of me - although at the back of my mind, I knew that I had played Royal Aberdeen’s back nine into the wind well every day.

“Balgownie is so much like my home course, Royal County Down, so I hadn’t given up hope entirely. Then Hannah had these triple bogeys at the 11th and 12th and suddenly I’m back in the hunt.

“Hannah has great potential. She will go on to win a lot of things. I felt I was rewarded for playing steadily all week. Nothing spectacular, just steady links golf, the same golf I play over my home links.”
