Monty joins Spanish field

European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie has made a late decision to add next week’s Spanish Open in Girona to his schedule.

Because he was not previously entered, Montgomerie had to seek an invitation to the event at PGA Catalunya.

He joins former Open champion John Daly in that category, the American playing his first event of the year after being given a six-month US Tour ban for misbehaviour and in February undergoing lap-band surgery in which a silicone band is placed around the upper portion of the stomach to limit food intake.

Montgomerie has not had a top 10 finish since he was runner-up in the French Open last June. He has fallen to 155th in the world.
