Northern Ireland's Michael Hoey lies just one shot off the lead on day one of Joburg Open in South Africa.

Hoey shot a seven-under-par 64 to join Steven Jeppesen in second place, one shot behind leader Trevor Fisher Jnr.

Fisher carded a first-round 63 to hold the clubhouse lead at eight under midway through the opening afternoon.

The South African was almost faultless through his nine-birdie round, dropping just one shot at the par-four 10th hole on the west course at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club.

Alfredo Garcia-Heredia was a further shot back on six under having completed his round in 65, the same score as Edoardo Molinari and Jaco van Zyl, while five players were a further stoke behind, including Jan Larsen and Martin Maritz, both of whom were faultless in their 66s.

But it was Fisher Jnr who had made the best start of the 206-player field at the 2.25 million rand (€168,296) tournament.
