Sorenstam misses cut in final LPGA event

Annika Sorenstam’s LPGA Tour career came to a disappointing end as she missed the cut at the season-ending ADT Championship.

The former world number one, who announced earlier this year that this would be her last season on the tour, shot a three-over-par 75 yesterday at Trump International Golf Club to finish tied for 18th place at five over through 36 holes.

The field was trimmed to 16 players after the second round, with Australian Karrie Webb locking up the final spot with a two-day total of three-over 147.

“It’s almost that a tear wants to come out, but it’s not really coming out,” said the 38-year-old Swede will play her final competition in three weeks at the Dubai Ladies Masters.

“I think it’s because I’m very happy with what I’ve done. You know, I’m content. I’ve said it all along, I feel good.

“I had really two good chances there (on the 14th and 15th), and when you don’t make those, you know it’s going to be very hard.”

World number one Lorena Ochoa, the defending champion, also failed to make the cut as she finished tied with Sorenstam after 36 holes.

“I can’t imagine how she’s doing right now,” said Ochoa of Sorenstam.

“But I guess it will come for all of us at one point. So we can only say that we enjoyed having her, and thank you for everything.”

The winner of 72 LPGA titles and 10 major championships, Sorenstam announced in May that she had decided to end her Hall of Fame career and pursue other interests.
