Leaders square up for play-off
Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate were both men on a mission when they returned to Torrey Pines for their US Open 18-hole play-off on Monday.
Woods, who on Sunday night saved himself with a dramatic closing 15-foot birdie putt to tie his fellow American on one under par, was trying to land his 14th major title, only four short of Jack Nicklaus’ record.
At 45 years and five months, meanwhile, Mediate was looking to take over from Hale Irwin as the oldest winner of the championship – and this after going six years without a victory.
