Disaster for Tiger at Torrey Pines

World number one Tiger Woods has made a double bogey on the first hole of the US Open at Torrey Pines today.

Chasing his third US Open title, Woods has won at the course six times as a professional.

KJ Choi and Steve Stricker were among the early pacesetters in today's first round.

Both starting their rounds at the 10th, Choi and Stricker birdied their first two holes and were tied for the lead with Patrick Sheehan at two under par.

Playing in his first US Open, Sheehan was at two under after birdies at numbers two and three.

Players lauded the USGA's set-up here as stern but fair in the build-up to the season's second major and it seemed there was little to complain about early on, with birdies out there for the taking.

Jim Furyk birdied his second hole, the 11th, but dropped back to even par with a bogey at 12. David Hearn of Canada and Justin Hicks were both at one under early on.

The much-anticipated grouping of the top three players in the world, Woods, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott teed off at 4.06pm Irish time.
