All to play for in South Carolina
Former Open champion Justin Leonard carded an opening 66 to share the lead on five under at the Verizon Heritage event at Harbour Town Golf Links in South Carolina.
Veteran Davis Love and Lucas Glover made it an all-American tie at the top, with Brian Davis and fellow Englishman Nick Dougherty in a large group just one stroke back.
Leonard, who lifted the Claret Jug at Troon in 1997, won this event six years ago and was quickly back in contention this time around.
Davis raced up the leaderboard with four birdies in his first five holes and he picked up another shot at the ninth to turn in 31.
The back nine was less spectacular, with a run of pars broken only by a bogey five at the 12th.
Dougherty's round was much more serene but no less impressive. He was soon under par after a four at the 502-yard second and it appeared his round was about to spark into life with birdies at nine and 10.
However, he did not pick up another stroke until the 395-yard 16th, but still finished with a creditable error-free 67.
Justin Rose had a much tougher time, signing for a 76 after a double bogey and four other dropped shots.
