Hogan braves winds to take medal

Newlands’ Andrew Hogan defied 40 mph gusts to card a four-under par 67 and grab the silver medal for the leading qualifier in the West of Ireland Championship at Rosses Point.

The 19-year-old Dubliner came home in six-under par 29 with six birdies in his last seven holes to finish one stroke clear of Forrest Little’s Eoin Arthurs (71) on one-over par 143.

Knock's Nick Grant (67) and Banbridge's Rory Leonard (70) tied for third on four-over par with Newlands’ Cian Curley (71) and Irish Close champion Shane Lowry (71).

Two over par to the turn, Hogan made five birdies in a row from the 12th to the 16th before picking up another shot on the downwind 18th after his 400-yard drive ran through the green.

He said: "It was just the putter. It didn’t matter how far it was, they just went in. They didn’t cut the greens, which are rolling lovely and that made it a bit easier with the wind. I just got the pace of them and they all rolled in dead centre.”

The top 64 qualified for the matchplay stages with the cut falling at 16-over par 158 with six players eliminated on countback.
