The Ulsterman carded a six-under-par 66 in his opening round today to end up four shots adrift of early leader Nick Dougherty.

Elsewhere, Darren Clarke and Peter Lawrie are both on three-under-par, Gary Murphy is two under and Paul McGinley and Damien McGrane are both one under.

Rory McIlroy, meanwhile, finished the day well down the leaderboard on three over par.
