Lee Westwood missed the chance to go ahead of Justin Rose at the top of the European Ryder Cup points race by losing a play-off to Phil Mickelson in the HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai.

Lee Westwood missed the chance to go ahead of Justin Rose at the top of the European Ryder Cup points race by losing a play-off to Phil Mickelson in the HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai.

Fellow Englishman Ross Fisher, who took a double bogey seven on the last when one ahead and then was also beaten by Mickelson at the second extra hole, is now in the 10th and last qualifying position. He would have been fourth if he had triumphed.
