Scott Verplank fired a second consecutive bogey-free six-under-par 66 today to open up a one-stroke lead at the midway point of the Children’s Miracle Network Classic in Florida.

Starting on the back nine at the Magnolia course, Verplank carded six birdies on his first nine holes to move onto 12-under-par overall and a shot ahead of Canada’s Stephen Ames and American duo Ryan Armour and Tag Ridings.

Ames carded 10 birdies in a 12-hole stretch before a bogey at the last left him with an impressive nine-under-par second round, while Armour dropped just one shot and signed for an eagle in a second round eight-under-par 64.

Overnight leader JP Hayes signed for a 69 and is in an eight-way tie for third at 10-under alongside Justin Leonard and Brett Wetterich.

Ridings, also starting on the back nine on the Magnolia course, made a storming start with three birdies in four holes before dropping a shot at the ninth to reach the turn two-under-par.

An eagle at the par-five fourth and two birdies over his final two holes saw Ridings sign for a six-under-par 66 following a five-under first round.
