Dane has winning vibe

Denmark’s Mads Vibe-Hastrup today claimed his first European Tour title with a near-flawless final round in the Madrid Open.

Vibe-Hastrup carded a closing 67 with six birdies and just one bogey to claim the £103,000 first prize and two-year tour exemption.

The 28-year-old, second in the Wales Open at Celtic Manor earlier this season, finished on 16 under par at Club de Campo, three ahead of Spain’s Alejandro Canizares.

Overnight leader Daniel Vancsik of Argentina recovered from taking a quintuple-bogey nine on the fifth to claim third on his own with a birdie on the 18th in a round of 73.

Teenage star Rory McIlroy failed in his bid to become the youngest winner in tour history, but the 18-year-old still added a share of fourth place with France’s Gregory Bourdy to his third in the Dunhill Links Championship last Sunday.

McIlroy, playing only his third event as a professional, carded a closing 70 after a rollercoaster round featuring an eagle, five birdies and five bogeys.
