Woods stalks leaders in Atlanta

Tiger Woods moved within two strokes of leader Tim Clark after the opening round at the Tour Championship was completed today.

Woods, among 20 players unable to finish yesterday due to a three-hour weather delay, had seven holes left when play resumed at 8am local time.

He promptly collected three birdies in four holes, before parring home on a muggy morning at East Lake to post a six-under-par 64, tied for third with fellow American John Rollins.

South African Clark, who finished yesterday, retained the lead on eight-under 62, one stroke ahead of Dubliner Padraig Harrington.

Sergio Garcia and Justin Rose, the only other Europeans in the 30-man field, were in the middle of the pack, Garcia shooting 68, Rose 69.

The Tour Championship is the finale of the US PGA Tour’s new four-event play-off series.

Woods leads the play-off points list and is the heavy favourite to collect the $10m bonus awarded to the play-off winner.

Even before the first round finished, the second round began in an effort to beat forecast thunderstorms.

However, the remnants of Hurricane Humberto appeared to drift north of town for the most part.
