Overton claims clubhouse lead
Jeff Overton was rewarded for his aggressive approach by taking a three-shot lead after the third round at the Wyndham Championship today.
The 24-year-old from Indiana plundered eight birdies from the defenceless Forest Oaks course, carding a six under-par 66 to move within sight of his first PGA Tour victory.
Overton sank a six foot par-saving putt at the final hole to post an 18-under 198 total, with Anders Hansen (68), Carl Pettersson (68), Tim Petrovic (68) and Billy Mayfair (64) tied for second on 15-under 201.
Overton is a lowly 165th on the FedEx Cup points table, but a solid final round will lift him into the top 144, and the field for next week’s first event in the new play-off series.
However, he will be more focused on winning, although he will have to stave off some experienced and battle-hardened players, including Mayfair, who stormed into the hunt with the day’s best round.
