Simple for Simon in Stockholm

Yorkshire’s Simon Dyson, sixth in the USPGA Championship on Sunday, carried on from where he left off in the first round of the Scandinavian Masters today.

Dyson carded a superb 64 in the final round at Southern Hills to claim his first top-10 finish in a major championship, eight shots behind the winner, Tiger Woods.

The 29-year-old from York might have been expected to take a week off after battling the sweltering heat in Oklahoma, but was straight back in action in Stockholm and showed no ill-effects on a damp morning at Arlandastad.

Starting from the 10th, Dyson picked up birdies at the 11th and 14th and then eagled the 15th to move into a share of the early lead with Australian Scott Strange on four under par.

Strange was first reserve for the £1.1m (€1.6m) event and only got into the 156-man field last night when Scotland’s David Drysdale withdraw with a neck injury.

The 30-year-old from Perth was then first out at 7.30am local time this morning but made the most of his last-minute call up with five birdies and a bogey in an outward half of 32.

Star attraction John Daly, second after the first round at Southern Hills before fading to 32nd, was one over par after five holes along with playing partner and defending champion Marc Warren of Scotland.

England’s David Howell, who missed the cut last week, was one under par after two birdies and one bogey in his first five holes.
