Sweden's Magnus A Carlsson took a giant step towards European Tour promotion thanks to his one-stroke win in the Challenge of Ireland at the Glasson Hotel and Country Club near Athlone.

Carlsson, 26, closed with a two-under par 70 to win by a shot on 10 under par from Frenchman Michael Lorenzo-Vera and Argentine Julio Zapata.

Up to sixth in the rankings after pocketing €24,000, Carlsson is now odds on to win one of 20 European Tour cards at the end of the season.

He said: "It feels very good to win. I don't think it has sunk in yet. Maybe when I get to the airport it will hit me.

"It was a great event with a lovely golf course, a great hotel with lovely rooms and great food. Everything was superb. I am in a good position now to get my European Tour card. A couple more good finishes I will be there."

Connemara's David Mortimer led the Irish challenge in a share of 13th on two under par thanks to a closing 69.

Ulsterman Gareth Maybin was a shot further back after a 73 with Birr's Justin Kehoe tied 18th on level par after a 71.
