Silver lining for McIlroy

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy won the Silver Medal for the top amateur at the Open Championship but admitted he was just happy to make the cut after failing to repeat his first-day heroics.

With no other amateurs surviving for the weekend the 18-year-old followed in the footsteps of the likes of Jose Maria Olazabal (1985), Tiger Woods (1996) and Justin Rose (1998).
