Walker Cup hopeful Jonathan Caldwell staked a strong claim for selection in yesterday's Irish Amateur Close Championship at Cork, where he shot a five under par 67 to lead the field after day one.
Caldwell decided against travelling to Scotland for the St Andrews links and it seems his decision has paid off dividends as he stormed to the overnight lead at Little Island.
