Heartbreak for Dredge at Wales Open

Home favourite Bradley Dredge suffered an agonising last-hole defeat in the Wales Open at Celtic Manor today.

After clawing back a four-shot deficit to lead by one with one to play, Dredge lost by a stroke when he bogeyed the 72nd after South African Richard Sterne had birdied the same hole minutes earlier.

It meant 25-year-old Sterne, third at last week's BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, took the £250,000 (€368,170) first prize with a brilliant five-under-par inward half of 29.

He finished 13 under, while Dredge's reward for his week's work fell to just less than £100,000 (€147,268) as he had to share second place with Singapore's Mardan Mamat and Danes Mads Vibe-Hastrup and Soren Kjeldsen.

Only two weeks ago Dredge caught Padraig Harrington from four behind in the Irish Open, only to lose a play-off.

Ireland's Gary Murphy finished tied for sixth on 11 under par.
