Walker leading in Scotland

Neil Walker clinched a dramatic one-shot victory on the final day of the latest PGA EuroPro Tour tournament.

Walker fired a birdie at the 18th hole to defeat rival Christopher Hanson and scoop £10,000 at the Macdonald Cardrona Hotel, Golf and Country Club in Peebles, Scotland.

At the start of the day, Walker, who finished second at Wensum Valley last month, was one shot ahead of Hanson but the lead frequently changed hands on a thrilling end to the competition.

Walker bogeyed three of the first five holes and that gave Hanson, who represents the Huddersfield-based Crosland Heath club, the upper hand as he had a three-shot advantage after 43 of the 54 holes.

A double-bogey by Walker at the par three13th looked like it could prove costly but he responded in fantastic style by hitting birdies at 14, 15 and 18 to snatch victory.

Matthew Ford (Marriott Tudor Park) finished third after a third day 68 left him on ten-under. However, he was left regretting one poor hole on Wednesday when he registered a triple bogey seven on the 454-yard par-four third.

Andrew Willey (Ramsdale Park) and Tom Haylock (The Hertfordshire) finished in equal fourth with totals of six-under.

The three winners from the previous events this season had all qualified for the final day, but all produced disappointing last rounds.

Wensum Valley winner Colm Moriarty (Glasson Golf Hotel and Country Club suffered the worst hole of his season as a triple bogey seven on the 12th left him in equal 28th.

England’s Graeme Clark, who finished first last week at Faithlegg in Ireland, also ended in his worst position of the campaign after a three-over total saw him come equal 31st.

Ireland’s Brian McElhinney, who claimed the top prize at Roganstown, finished one shot behind Clark in tied 35th.
