Monty set to miss cut

Colin Montgomerie today looked certain to miss his first halfway cut at Wentworth – his happiest hunting ground in golf – since his debut in 1989.

And his four over par 76 in the second round of the BMW PGA Championship matched the three-time winner’s worst-ever round on the course.

At two under par overnight Montgomerie was only four strokes behind leaders Justin Rose and Paul Broadhurst, but he finished the day two over. The cut was expected to come later in the day at either level par or one over.

Even after finishing with birdies at the par five 17th and 18th the 43-year-old eight-time European number one was in no mood to linger long afterwards.

“My form and my thoughts I think you can write for yourself,” he told the waiting reporters. “I don’t think to say anything more, I’m afraid.”

Montgomerie, who also won the World Match Play title on the course in 1999, has nothing better than a sixth place finish in Dubai to show for his season’s work.

The Scot was playing with twice US Open champion Retief Goosen and he was definitely out after rounds of 76 and 74 left him six over.
