Fernandez-Castano and Brier in play-off

Spain’s Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Austrian Markus Brier went into a play-off for the Telecom Italian Open in Milan today.

Fernandez-Castano gave himself little chance when he stood on the 10th six behind, but with an eagle and five birdies – and a trip to the water at the 13th - he came home in 30 for a 65.

Brier then caught him with birdies at the 16th and 17th and forced sudden death when he parred the last, just missing a 20-foot birdie chance.

They were on the 16 under total of 200 for an event cut to three rounds because of earlier rain and the threat of Sunday thunderstorms.

Ireland's Peter Lawrie finished on -10, while Gary Murphy finished on -7.
