Minoza makes his move in Jakarta
Veteran Frankie Minoza of the Philippines moved to the top of the leaderboard midway through the third round of the Enjoy Jakarta Astro Indonesia Open today.
Lying five shots off the lead on three under at the start of the round, the 47-year-old surged to the front with a blistering display at the Damai Indah Golf and Country Club, carding six birdies and a single bogey to move to eight under after 14 holes.
Second-round leaders Andrew Tampion of Australia and Mikko Ilonen of Finland began on eight under but the front-running duo struggled on the front nine of the Pantai Indah Kapuk course.
Tampion dropped to five under after 11 holes with three bogeys on his front nine, while Ilonen wilted in the heat of Jakarta with four bogeys in his first 11 holes to fall to four under.
Minoza’s closest challenger was Korea’s Suk Jong-Yul, who was six under through 11 holes after carding a birdie and two bogeys, while first-round leader Chawalit Plaphol was tied with Tampion on five under after 14 holes after shooting three birdies and two bogeys.
England’s Gareth Davies was seven under after birdies on three of the first five holes, but bogeys on the sixth, 10th and 12th saw him surrender the initiative.
Thongchai Jaidee was part of a large group on four under while defending champion Simon Dyson failed to sparkle, carding a level-par 71 to remain at one under after three rounds.
Sixty-eight players made the cut, set at a two-over-par 144.
