Mickelson moves out in front
Phil Mickelson claimed the outright lead in the €4.2m AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am after two birdies in his first 12 holes of the third round eased him ahead of compatriot Jim Furyk.
Mickelson was playing Spyglass Hill – one of three courses used in the event that features amateurs and celebrities – and a venue where he shares the course record of 62 with England’s Luke Donald.
Starting on the back nine the left-hander’s two birdies came at the 11th and 17th and moved him to 14 under.
World number two Furyk, playing Pebble Beach, was level par through six holes, meaning he was in a tie for second with John Mallinger.
Mallinger, playing in only his eighth PGA Tour event but having the easiest task at Poppy Hills, was three under par for seven holes.
Kevin Sutherland, also playing Poppy Hills, moved into fourth on 10 under par after one birdie in his first six holes.
England’s Greg Owen was one-under through six holes at Spyglass – seven under for the tournament and level with Tom Watson, Corey Pavin and Vijay Singh.
