South African Ernie Els became a popular joint leader of the SAA Open at Humewood GC in Port Elizabeth with a round of 67 but is sure to face some tough competition from a number of compatriots.

The stage is slowly being set for another showdown between Els and fellow top-10-ranked countryman Retief Goosen with the latter, who won last year in a titanic battle against Els, shooting his way up the leaderboard.
